‘Tis the Season to Feel Better: How LEDs Can Help With The “Pandemic Blues”

While COVID-19 has impacted parts of the world in different ways, the lockdowns, economic hardship, and depression experienced by most has added quite the emotional toll during the holidays.

As the holidays approach, however, some are getting a lift in their spirits through lighting displays with elaborate designs combining form and color. While this has always played a part of the holiday tradition in most parts of the Western world, it appears that this year marks a time when people will benefit from holiday lighting decorations the most.

Lighting Displays Brighten Our Spirits

This year, more than ever before, residents of British Columbia are creating brighter and more elaborate holiday lighting displays. This news comes from a recent report by BC Hydro that claims that 20% of people plan to do more decorating this year.

Bob Gammer, a spokesperson for the group, gave an interview recently to Vista Radio where he stated that 22% of people plan to put up an average of at least eight strands of lighting this year.

“A lot of people are really starting to get enthusiastic and even fanatical where they have many light strands or even inflatable displays in their front yard,” said Gammer.

He stressed that replacing incandescent lights with LEDs can help people save up to 90% on their power bill - up to $40 on average.

“We are noticing already that Christmas lights account for about 3% of all the electricity that is being used this holiday season,” said Gammer. “That adds up on people’s bills, so we are recommending you use LED or holiday lights to decorate your indoors or outdoors this holiday season.”

LEDs Improve Mood and Well-Being Year Round

Research shows that right lighting can have a large impact on an individuals mood and can even promote a sense of wellbeing while improving productivity. LEDs, in particular, can make a significant difference in the way a living or workspace feels and functions thanks to the lighting spectrum they can provide.

Human Centric Lighting - a theoretical concept that combines lighting design with physics to create optimal lighting conditions - can be facilitated by the use of LEDs. Besides their advanced dimming capabilities, LEDs can be customized by tuning their “color” to suit the time of day. LED lighting can also be optimized to suit the function of the room where “cool” tones can be used early in the day and warm tones (like those emitted by candles) can be used in the evening.

LED Lighting Enhances Learning Environments

Kids especially benefit from the use of LEDs in learning environments. Old-fashioned artificial fluorescent bulbs emit harsh lights that can negatively affect children - especially those suffering from learning disabilities, autism, ADHD and dyslexia.

LED lighting can be optimized for learning environments so kids can focus and be more productive without suffering from the harsh effects of traditional fluorescent lighting.

LEDs Can Boost Savings This Holiday Season and Beyond

Christmas lights bring beauty and happiness to our neighborhoods, however the cost of running traditional lights can be high. The difference in energy use is massive - if you were to run just 10 strands of 100 mini incandescent lights this year, it would set you back around $45 over the course of the season, compared to LED Christmas lights that would only cost you $5 for the same amount of lights.

That's a whopping 89% in energy cost savings! Now imagine what savings can be achieved if you upgraded ALL of your building's lights to LEDs... that's more than enough money to cover all of your Christmas shopping this year!
